About

I am a freelance multimedia journalist and editor based in Srinagar, India. I have seven years of reporting and editing experience, covering the conflict in Jammu and Kashmir and the resulting human rights crisis in the state. In 2017, I won the Red Ink award for excellence in journalism in the human rights category for a series of reports (linked here, here, and here) on the situation in Kashmir after militant commander Burhan Wani was killed in July 2016.

I have worked as a staffer for Scroll.in and Firstpost before taking up freelance work. My work has focused on the coverage of the Kashmir conflict, reporting on the region's politics, ongoing militancy, human rights, press freedom, and the relationship between mainland India and Kashmir with a focus on security operations in Kashmir. I also cover stories of human interest, lifestyle and culture. My work has appeared in Scroll.in, Firstpost, Newslaundry, Article 14, Times of India TOI+, Fifty Two, Rest of World, Sveriges Radio, South China Monitoring Post, and other publications.

I am available for freelance reporting or editing work. You can reach out to me over email at rayanhnaqash [at] gmail [dot] com for commissions, tips, or just to say hi. I am also on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook
